Psalm 90:12 provides a fitting perspective: “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” The goal is not simply to count another year but to consider what that year is becoming.
Some birthdays arrive with celebration and laughter. Others come during seasons of uncertainty, loss, transition, or unanswered prayer. Scripture speaks to all of them. God’s faithfulness does not depend upon whether a particular year went according to our plans.
For Christians, the ultimate source of hope is Jesus Christ. Earthly birthdays remind us that time passes, but the gospel points toward something greater: redemption, resurrection, and eternal life.
So as another year begins, give thanks for the past without becoming trapped by it. Entrust the future to God without pretending to know everything it will contain. Seek wisdom instead of merely seeking success. Choose love instead of resentment. Practice gratitude instead of comparison. Walk in obedience instead of fear.
And above all, remember that your life has meaning because it belongs to the God who created you, sustains you, calls you to Himself, and offers salvation through Jesus Christ.
May your next year be marked not merely by more days, but by deeper faith, greater wisdom, stronger love, faithful service, and a closer walk with God.
